Meet Sparrowwood's Director

Kim Bell (back row, 2nd from left) in her Village counselor days..

Kim Bell rejoined the Glisson staff in 2011. As Program Director over Village and Sparrowwood, Kim works closely with the Program Team to coordinate Glisson's summer camp programs. One of her primary responsibilities is training and supervising Sparrowwood's summer directors and counselors.

When Kim first rejoined the staff, we asked her a few questions for an article in our November 2011 edition of Echoes from Camp

When did you first visit Glisson?
When I was 5 or 6 years old on a retreat with my parent’s Sunday School class.

Were you ever a camper?
10 summers of Village camp

How about summer staff?
‘93 and ‘95 Village Counselor, ‘96 Section Leader

What’s your current position?
Program Director

Favorite places in camp?
There is a special place where my brother and I had painted rocks and left them together when we were younger. I like to walk by there and say a prayer for Brian. I also love to sit on the chapel benches and think/write/pray. The names on the rocks and benches remind me of the legacy of this place and of those who have been a part of my camp memories.

Favorite part of summer camp?
Living in Christian community and developing relationships because of shared experiences and shared faith.

Any experiences or individuals stand out?
Bob Cagle was an important part of my camping experience. He had a way of quietly bringing perspective and understanding to situations. We hosted the first “Bobapalooza” to honor him while I was on staff and that was a hoot! There are lots of other stories and memories that I love to recount.

Why Glisson, why now?
I went to another camp as a kid for a few years before coming to Glisson and I cried every day because I did not want to be there. The summer before 4th grade I came to Glisson and I loved it! Then I cried because I didn’t want to leave! Being here now is an opportunity to minister to so many who come here to experience God’s love and to give back so much of what Glisson has given me through the years.

What was your most recent job?
Conference Youth Coordinator. I am a wife and mother of two girls, which is a full time job in and of itself!

Creek hike or Singing on the Porch?
Singing on the Porch

Zip Line or Alpine Tower?
I’ve never done either, but check back in a few months and I’ll tell ya...

Campfire worship or Chapel?
Yes please...

What's going on at Glisson that you wish you had as a camper?
Zipline and Tower are both exciting new elements. The facilities have come a long way since I was a camper....I am so thankful for donors and the maintenance crew who keep camp “in shape”!

Anything else you'd like to share with the Glisson family?
There are a few times in life where you can look back and see how God is using the events of your past, good and bad, for God’s good. This ministry opportunity is absolutely one of those times for me. My husband Chuck and I are so excited to be able to be here with our girls, Lucy and Blakely, to be a part of the ministry of this place that has been such a huge part of my life.

"Our camper says he feels closer to God when he is at Glisson. He says he takes that feeling home with him each summer."

Craig, father of a 2013 Village camper
